Call it a musical in the tradition of Broadway. Saro, as the musical is called, was conceived after a Broadway musical based on the life and times of the Nigerian-born Afrobeat icon Fela and was performed before a Lagos audience.

Bolanle Austen-Peters – better known as the amazon behind the Victoria Island-based cultural centre, Terra Kulture – thought it was odd that the production, titled Fela! featured no Nigerian actor or dancer when it was staged at the Eko Hotel and Suites.

“I woke up one day and wrote the story, which I believe is very relevant to our society and our youths,” she recalled. “I looked around me and asked: What is the story of an average Nigerian? What is the story of the average settlers of Lagos?”

Lagos became a melting-pot of non-indigenous people. “Most of us came here, just like many went to America, saluted as the land of freedom; and that is what I decided to explore. If you look around, everybody wants to come to Lagos.

INSIDE Terra Kulture hall few days ago, it was a harmonious fusion of traditional African drums throbbing and the clash of horns as Saro, the Musical was unveiled to a critical audience made up of government officials, theatre buffs and business executives.

In lending their support to this first classic cultural production from the heart of Africa, these personalities not only affirmed the primacy of Nigeria’s arts and culture, which leaders merely pay lips service, but also dispelled notions that only foreign productions can entertain Nigerians on such a grand scale. 

On hand at the unveiling and preview were some of Nigeria’s great theatre, culture and literary personalities. 

SARO The Musical… The Big Broadway-style Theatrical Project Steps Out Boldly

The formal introduction of the Broadway-style theatrical production, SARO The Musical to the Nigerian public was held on Tuesday September 10 in the function hall of Terra Kulture on Tiamiyu Savage Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. 

In attendance were carefully selected notable names in Nigeria theatrical circuit, the art academic world, patrons of the Creative industries, potential sponsors, as well as senior Arts and Culture journalists from nearly all the leading media houses.

Those who witnessed the official unveiling of the big theatre dream included Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Mr Disun Holloway; renowned actress, Mrs Taiwo Ajai-Lycett , fondly called matriarch of the Nigerian stage;  renowned dramatist, director and culture journalist, Ben Tomoloju; former Artistic Director of National Troupe of Nigeria, and current Dean of Humanities at the Redeemer University, Professor Ahmed Yerima; lawyer, art patron, Mrs Myma Belo-Osagie; popular actress, and now managing Director of the Malete Film Village, Mrs. Joke Silva; and renowned TV personality and CEO of EbonyTV, Mo Abudu. There was also the Consul General of the French Embassy, Francoise Sastourne.  Others included Dr Tunde Awosanmi, a teacher of directing from University of Ibadan; Mr Deji Toye a lawyer, playwright and poet; and Mr Ola Fajemisin, manager programme at the Nigeria Television Authority. 


The club of celebrities was led by the afro-pop musical icon, Innocent Idibia aka TuFace; and included, the actress Kate Henshaw; and On-Air personalities, Steve Onu aka Yaw of WazobiaFM, Chris Ihidero of TopFM, and Wana Udobong of Inspiration FM, among others.

Everyone is talking about Saro The Musical, a stage play conceived, written and produced by Mrs. Bolanle Austen-Peters; it is designed to serve as a response to the recent trend of Nigerian corporate organisations and the affluent importing theatrical packages from abroad without giving necessary encouragement or assistance to local talents to flower.
