October
25th sees the opening of SARO The Musical, touted as the largest Broadway style
production to come out of Nigeria.
On
October 8th, we were treated to a preview of sorts of the stage musical that
the producers promised us is going to blow us away. Not usual practice, the
preview was actually a rehearsal but the team was keen to share their ambitions
and give us an insight into the scale and vision of the production. The preview
was held at Terra Kulture where they have been preparing but the production
will be staged at the New Oriental Hotel Grand Ballroom which currently boasts
the best stage in Nigeria.
The
rehearsal was put on without the full complement of lights, sound and costume
but they still managed to raise goose bumps with music from an impressive array
of instruments including a horn section and traditional percussion. Despite the
fact that they have been rehearsing for 90 days, the singers and performers
looked like they were enjoying themselves and their enthusiasm was infectious.
Written
and produced by Terra Kulture’s Managing Director Bolanle Austin Peters, SARO
The Musical features original music as well as borrowing from all eras of
Nigerian music up to the current popular music including Lagbaja, Tiwa Savage
and I think I heard some Wizkid in there. She is working with some of the best
but young hands in the industry led by Makinde Adeniran (Executive Director),
Ayo Ajayi (Music Director), Kenneth Uphopho (Drama) and Gbenga Yusuf (Dance).
We
only got to watch the introductory scenes, not enough to give too much away but
enough to draw us into the story with a festival, a lovers rendezvous, the
start of a journey and the promise of Lagos, the land of opportunity.
SARO
is the story of four young men who – determined to break from the yoke of
frustration and lack of opportunities to explore their talents and realize their
dreams – decided to embark on a journey to the land of opportunities….LAGOS.
A
devastating experience lands them in the lap of destiny, success ignites them
and love fuels them.

The
first preview, held on September 10th, and attended by a select audience
including Professor Ahmed Yerima, former General Manager of the National
Theatre; Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Disu Holloway; Ebony Life TV
founder Mo Abudu and 2face, garnered
rave reviews.
The
team assure us that they have “spared nothing to ensure people get the best
experience” with SARO . We are looking forward to seeing everything they’ve got
in store. (See the dates, showtimes, venue and ticket details after the
pictures).
